Galway’s diners are now demanding an international choice of cuisine not only in restaurants but also in their homes.
According to a leading Galway caterer, more and more people who entertain within the home are turning to more exotic and exciting dishes, a trend which looks likely to continue.
Since beginning business four years ago, CM Catering has witnessed first hand the increased interest in international dishes and healthier food options.
Traditional Irish menu options have been joined by exciting Asian and European flavours. According to CM Catering owner Clodagh Egan, Galway’s food choices have been transformed. “Compared to 10 years ago, customers’ food preferences are unrecognisable. Because of the variety of dining options familiar to the public, our customers will often simply specify food based on a region or country and we tailor make a menu based on that. Alternatively, some customers have very specific ideas which we strive to satisfy.”
In addition to higher levels of variety, Galway’s tastes have also developed a keen appetite for healthier food options.
Diverse salads and vegetarian dishes have seen a marked increase in demand, a pattern reflected throughout the country.
Ms Egan said, “Healthy living, and in particular healthy food options, has become commonplace in modern Ireland. From supermarkets to juice bars, it’s clear that the public are more aware than ever of the benefits of a balanced diet. As a young catering company we find it very exciting, ensuring we are constantly one step ahead of the public.”
More than ever parties within the home are preferred to nights out on the town. “A number of factors have influenced the increase in private entertaining, the main two being the smoking ban and drink driving laws. Other important factors, however, include the willingness to use catering companies and also the comfort associated with entertaining in the home – many people are now avoiding the hustle and bustle of town,” said Ms Egan.
